Abstract
One of the literary features of rhetoric is Epanalepsis, the repetition of the initial word of a couplet at the end of the same couplet; this very repetition makes the discourse beautiful and aesthetic. The name given to this literary figure has caused a lot of controversies among the Arab and Iranian literary men. To Ibn_Moataezz, Sakkaki, Khatib Tabrizi, Saddin Taftazi and some other Arab literary men, and to many of the Persian speaking rhetorians, this figure of speech has been referred to as Epanalepsis; whereas, Mohammad Ibn Omar Radviani, Shams Ghais Razi, and those who follow them and some of the contemporary authors of books written on Figures of Speech, have referred to it as Anadiplosis.
The present study aims at investigating the justifications for the opposite views clarifying the more accurate one and stating the documented proofs. To do so all the reliable Arabic and Persian literary sources have been analyzed. This study follows a descriptive style based on a literary method of research. The results of present study indicate that one can achieve a better understanding of this figure of speech.
